Alongside the Leader of Broxbourne Council, Corina Gander, I have presented a letter to the Prime Minister at 10 Downing Street, demanding the end of the use of the Delta Marriott Hotel in Cheshunt for asylum seeker accommodation.
The Council and local Conservatives have consistently opposed the use of the hotel for this purpose since it was taken over by the Government in 2022. Following the High Court judgement in favour of Epping Forest District Council in August 2025, Broxbourne Council was the first local authority to announce its intention to explore its own enforcement action.
Since my election in July 2024, I have called on the Government to honour its manifesto commitment to close all asylum hotels at every possible occasion in Parliament, and I fully support the actions Broxbourne Conservative-run council are taking under the leadership of Cllr Gander to close the hotel.
The people of Broxbourne are fed up with their concerns about the levels of immigration being ignored. The Government needs to start listening, get a grip on the situation and deliver what they promised: the closure of every asylum hotel, starting with the Marriott in Cheshunt.
Cllr Gander said, “Since I became Leader of Broxbourne Council in May 2025, I have made the closure of this hotel my top priority. I’ve written to the Home Secretary numerous times to make clear the impact this is having on our area, but their responses haven’t been good enough. That’s why I’ve now taken the fight right to the top of Government, and I will not rest until the hotel is returned to our community.”
