The Government has announced that Hertfordshire, Broxbourne and East Herts district councils will be abolished and replaced by a new unitary authority to be known as 'Eastern Hertfordshire'.
This new mega-council will be responsible for a vast amount of vital public services, from roads and adult social care to bin collections and planning. It will serve a population of more than 280,000 people across an area of 300 miles.
I have never supported these plans. They are the result of the Labour Government’s ideological choices, acting against the will of local residents and councillors.
From 2028, when the new council begins operating, there will be major changes to the services we all rely on.
It is inevitable that council tax will increase and we will see decisions on housebuilding made by individuals with no knowledge of the towns and villages here in Broxbourne. The future of local facilities like the Spotlight Theatre and Laura Trott Leisure Centre will be in doubt.
Your voice should remain at the forefront of this process, so I will continue to represent your views to the Government and our local councils in the coming months. My role as your local voice in Parliament will remain unchanged.
